From the desk of Dravenheart:

If Spawn was the single most difficult figure I’ve ever made, this is definitely the most agonizing set I’ve ever fixed up. So much trial and error. And white. Didn’t help that these guys have looked different in just about every appearance they’ve ever had. So, it took some discussing to work out exactly which designs were desired in the request. And then we had bonus stuff.

For Jack, Queen and King, the arms and torsos were all sculpted. Added hair and the crown to the King head, and just the crown to Jack. Added some sculpt to an alternate Ace head to give him the battle damaged look to show part of the cybernetic head underneath. Added some sculpt to King’s belt to give it a smoother look, and then sculpted the crown onto Queen’s hair. From there, everything was just parts swaps and then some really tedious repainting. And then the cards. Card stands were requested, so I custom made Ace’s out of those washable tattoo sleeves. Glued two together to make them sturdier. For the other cards I glued them three thick. Added a magnet in each figure’s foot, and then a metal piece to each card. After all that, I cut out some throwing cards for Jack, throwing spades for 10, modified a Cable gun for 10, modified the Halo grenade for Queen, and gave King a sword. Whew. And…done!

“Never really been too much of a fan of Domino, but she is pretty popular. Got a request recently, so she finally made it to my project list. It was inevitable that I would end up making this X-Force member, really.”

[CUSTOMS] Spawn – by Dravenheart

From the breath-taking workbench of Dravenheart

Following Haunt, I was asked to fix up a Spawn. I knew this day was inevitable, but thankfully it was requested without the giant boot. I hate that thing. The design changed here and there as we went along, before finally coming to this. Was actually fun, and I’m looking forward to remaking him again at some point. Making a version with spikes on his lower legs and the chain belt.

The cape held me up initially. I’ve seen a ton of different approaches, and I just wasn’t sure how to go about it. But, then I saw some footage from the old SNes Spawn game, and decided to approach him in the same way. So, I started with the Grim Reaper cape, cut the collar down, and added the collar from Dr Strange. Then, I added sculpt to give it the proper height and look. The body itself was just a repaint with sculpt added to his upper leg and upper arm. Then, I used some toothpicks for the spikes. A simple enough rendition, but still a fun first endeavor into the character.

From the workbench of Chaos Customs’ Dravenheart

I like delving into new lines, and the awesome part about today’s world? There’s always a new line to try out. A few weeks ago, a request came in to make someone’s D&D Elf Ranger in figure form. I was given this image as a reference with the only note being to include a red arrow. I made fantasy style customs back when I first started customizing, but haven’t messed with them since, unfortunately. Couldn’t resist giving him a shot, and hope to eventually get to do more.

“I really like when figures end up with a long recipe list. Can be a bit tedious to type out and describe, but makes me feel rather accomplished. Anyway, I was asked to create this barbarian, and sent images of another customizer’s creation. I’m honestly not sure who’s it was. I was to use it as a guideline, but I altered some things a little bit for my own design.”

Recipe:

Body – MU Doc Samson
Head – MU Punisher
Hair – GI Joe 25th Baroness
Sword – MU Skaar
Belt – MU Baron Zemo

[CUSTOMS] Deadshot by Dravenheart

Dravenheart is prolific. Aside from Icecreamman, he might put out the most sheer volume of customs I’ve seen. Not only does he do amazing work, and introduce us to characters we might not see in toy form, but he also gives stories and info behind his work. Personally, I do not enjoy looking a pictures of customs where the artist has given no background, no words, and no communications. If I wanted that, I would turn into a 12 year-old girl and hang out on Pinterest or Facebook! Nope, Draven is the real deal, and it is always an honour to showcase his work!

From the workshop of Dravenheart:

“Even though I enjoyed Secret Six and really like Suicide Squad, I am not a fan of Deadshot. He just never caught my interest. As far as assassins go, I greatly prefer Deathstroke. And since I had one, I even included a duo shot of them here. A request came in, though, so I finally gave it a shot.

Started out by sculpting his chest, lower torso, and bracers. I had this oversized blaster on hand, so I cut the lower half off and attached it to his arm. Cut the sheaths and straps off a Deadpool belt, then cut and smoothed over the logo. For the holster I just grabbed one from Bullseye, and cut the strap off another Bullseye holster for it. Full repaint, then I attached the head to finish him off.”

From the workshop of NAMEHERE:

“It was mentioned to me recently that since I’ve been doing so many Street Fighter customs as of late, I should try some Mortal Kombat figures. I’ve typically avoided the line since they look drastically different in every single game. Ryu always looks like Ryu. Jax, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage? Nope. But, I thought I’d give it a shot, so expect a few over the next few weeks. To start us off though, I recently bought the Cyber Ninja three pack and noticed Smoke was blue. I thought that was weird since he’s supposed to be purple. Then, I couldn’t help but wonder why he wasn’t grey. So, I decided to cover both bases. A couple of careful repaints later and here we have purple and grey variations of Cyber Smoke.”

From the workshop of Dravenheart:

“So much of what I’ve been making these days has been remakes. A lot I still haven’t even bothered to post. But, Black Lightning was one I’ve wanted to try out for a while. What actually held me up was his head. After seeing the Infinite Heroes figure, that was pretty much the only head I could be convinced to use for him. I finally got my hands on one recently, and decided to give him a shot. Fixing up the body was a simple enough process. Even the yellow lines didn’t give me too much trouble. Fairly happy with how he came out in the end.”

[CUSTOMS] M Bison (by Dravenheart)

From the workshop of Dravenheart:

“This one took some time, but was a ton of fun. I’ve been experimenting more and more with Street Fighter characters as of late, and each has challenged me in some new way. Whether it be working with an unfamiliar body type, or sculpting up new specific details. And like a true boss character, every time I thought I had him beat, he kept dragging me into additional rounds. Looking forward to making him again, but my progress with him has helped me extensively with some of the others.

The body was generally a straightforward repaint. I added the kneepads and sculpt to the front of the boots to give the armored look. I originally intended for the cape to be removable like in the game itself, but then I found my Beta Ray Bill cape, and decided to just add to the shoulder pads a bit. The difficult part was the head. I started with Skaar. He matched Bison’s expression perfectly. I tried out about five hat casts before I found a Red Skull one that had the right look. I then had to cut it to fit on his head, then resculpt the top and back of the hat itself. I cut ears off the First Appearance Hulk, attached them, then sculpted on some hair to finish him off. Full repaint, and finally done!”

From the desk of Dravenheart:

“I’ve made some variations of Shazam before, but I think this one is definitely my new favorite. When the request came in, I was hesitant on the body type, but now that I see the final product, I will definitely be making more Shazam customs in this build. Another thing to note is the head. I was originally going to sculpt the hood over the head, but once I saw how close this cast looked, I opted to just add the hood onto the cape instead.

Gave the body a full repaint then started to work on the cape. I cut the Mysterio helmet off, then sculpted on the second cape. Then sanded it and sculpted it some more. Then, I added the hood to it. I’m still not great at eyes, so I opted to cop out with an electric effect. It looked good, but he seemed to be missing something after that. So, I grabbed some lightning effects from Storm and attached them to his arms. That was the final touch I needed to fully sell me on this design.”

[CUSTOMS] Nuclear Man (by Dravenheart)

Dravenheart from the Chaos Crew showcases his talent and affinity for (semi-?) obscure characters with a great take on DC’s super villain, Nuclear Man.

“Noticing I have a trend lately with cast heads. lol This seemed like an absolutely insane choice of character, and I almost put the project aside about three or four times during the week I made him. But, when I was younger, I liked the thought of Nuclear Man. Mainly because it was the second time Superman fought another super powered being. Now we have more options. lol But, it crossed my mind and I didn’t see many other attempts at the character. One or two, but that was about it. So, I looked up some images and came across this one from the old tie-in comic. He was really simple overall, save for that emblem. That was a pain.”

From the heroic desk of Dravenheart

“I wanted to focus on video game characters this week and that led me rather quickly to Contra. Everyone remembers playing this game at some point in the 90s. And everyone remembers loving the spread gun. lol So, I couldn’t resist giving them a shot. However, there was no solid lead on what design to use. I knew I wanted something more similar to their original looks, but there were no images anywhere to help me. So, I turned to designs made by other customizers and with a lot of inspiration coming from 6″ renditions of these guys, I was able to pull this simple, yet effective, design off.”

[CUSTOMS] Dark Knight Returns – Batman (by Dravenheart)

From the desk of Dravenheart:

“This is a variation of Batman I’ve wanted to do for a while, but I always hated that he was pretty much the same size as the Hulk. The story was good, but the look just didn’t make any sense to me. However, in Batman: Arkham City, one of the alternate skins is Dark Knight Returns, and they really slimmed him up. He’s still big, but not huge. I liked how it looked, so I jumped on that variation. The only problem I hit was finding a cape and head appropriately sized, but that came together thanks to Young Justice Batman.

Champion worked great since his belt could be repainted directly into Batman’s utility belt. I cut the gauntlet blades off of a 90s Animated Batman, glued them to the body, then sculpted around them. A full repaint from there, and that pretty much finished him off. I did have a different head option, but I completely forgot to paint it up, so instead of giving it more time, I just went ahead and popped the head from Young Justice Batman on him, and figure I’ll use the other head if I remake him with the yellow emblem.”

Dravenheart has posted up another comic book character gem with his custom version of Batman Beyond

“Seen some great Batman Beyond customs before and decided to jump on it myself. Mostly because I had a spare set of arms from Spiderman 2099. And in a lot of images I saw his belt looked quite close to Scarlet Spider’s. And when you throw in a Batman head, it was the obvious project”.

From the workshop of Dravenheart:

Since the release of the issue of Deadpool featuring the alternate cover, this variation of Deadpool has been done many times; I believe even with the shield, which may be where this request came from. I was commissioned a little while ago to make a Deadpool Cap, but instead of a backpack of weapons, making him more Cap-like and giving him a shield.

Getting lines even normally can be rough for me. Getting them even on a round shield was painful. They’re still a little off, but after countless attempts, it finally came out good enough to go with. The figure itself was the easy part. It didn’t take me any time to repaint the body and head. I cut the wings off the Cap head and attached them to Deadpool, and even managed to keep them looking like they attach naturally.
