From the desk of ska_lives:

“So, after preordering this about this time last year, I finally received my Captain Harlock figure from BBTS! For those not familiar with the character, the dude is a badass!

His original series is available for watch on one of the streaming networks..I think its HuluPlus. FHE also put out some edited VHS dubs of some of the older OVA adventures of the good captain, notably Revenge of the Space Pirate(good stuff). Also on top of this he appears in another series by his creator/ series direcctor(Leiji Matsumoto), called Galaxy Express 999. This was my first exposure to the character.

Through 999( Three9)’s two OVA films GE999 and Adieu Galaxy Express 999, you get a decent look into a small part of the universe in which Harlock inhabits. He has also had a spin off series for his love interest and fellow space pirate Queen Emeraldas. I do hope that they make a figure of her, I will buy the Hell out of it! In more recent years, I believe back in 2006? his series was rebooted as Captain Herlock, same character, same general story, goofy name translation. Then earlier this year or late last year, he was given the feature length CGI film treatment, and that depiction is what the figure is based on.

I know that this intro is a bit slap dash, but for the amount of mythos around him, I recommend watching the series that he is in and reading the wiki.

Without further ado, the figure!”

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOO ZAWAME CITY!

Zordon’s Wispy Beard, have I been looking forward to this. When the first images of the Gaim Figuarts hit back in January, I, like so many other fans, began frothing at the mouth. They were beautiful. Or, as the running joke among the fandom goes: “JUICY”.

The staggering, unforeseen popularity of Kamen Rider Gaim made me a bit unsure about whether or not I’d actually be able to secure a figure back when I preordered him alongside SHF Baron back in February, especially given my financial situation at the time and HobbyLink Japan’s notoriously sketchy habits of allowing more preorders than they can fulfill and then fulfilling them at random. While I was unable to secure Baron (at first), I was more than willing, and happy, to settle for Gaim.

So how does he stack up to the hype? Well dear readers, put down your lockseeds for a moment and let’s find out*.”

“I love GI Joe and I love transformers, so when I heard about Acid Rain military-ish transforming vehicles I already knew I was in.

A kind of blocky anti-aircraft tank vehicle I guess, would provide some armored cover for the ground forces. The paint apps are excellent as you can feel the texture, has two flip down foot rests on the outside arms for extra troops to stand on, cockpit seats one figure. has a panel that lifts down to put batteries in but I didnt have any of those type of batteries, but apparently it has a pew pew sound.”

Spotlight Splash (primary)

From the desk of ska_lives:

ThreeA is the toy company that puts out the figures related to Ashley Wood’s World War Robot (WWR) series. These are premium priced action figures and often times sell out LUDICROUSLY FAST! I am lucky to have found these guys for pre-order on BBTS this time last year. They arrived today after having their initial release date of 4th qtr 2013 pushed out to 1st 2014. Quite the wait indeed.

The series is based on the comics and art books of the same name and are themselves tied into (albeit seemingly very loosely) his Popbot comic series. The story itself is great and, well, too much to get into here.

However here is a link to the wiki entry:

http://www.threeawiki.com/World_War_Robot

There are a variety of Robot styles and these figures represent some of the more common designs. Now, before I get too carried away, let us segway into the actual review so that I do not ramble.”

[REVIEW] Club Infinite Earth’s – Phantom Stranger

Feb 212014

phantom_stranger_presents_header

From the mysteriously complicated desk of Phantom Stranger:

Alright, I’ve been putting this off for too long now. I’ve been meaning to review this figure since it came out back in February last year, but for some reason I never got around to it. Perhaps it’s because I didn’t have a lot to say about the figure, or perhaps it’s because I just didn’t feel it was worth the time. I honestly cannot say, but we might as well get it over with.

Starting with the box we have the usual style that the Club Infinite Earth figures came in, with original artwork of Stranger wearing a dinner plate around his neck.

Aaaand is seems Mattel didn’t know which version of the character they were doing. The Bio on the back indicates it’s supposed to be the New 52 character, but the figure itself represents the silver and modern age version, which had 4 different origins to confuse everyone. The box also states “None” for the name, which lines up more with the silver/modern as opposed to the N52. It’s like buying a Huntress figure and her name being Helena Wayne but the bio saying she was the daughter of crime lord, Santo Cassamento.

Opening the figure up is of course easy, just slide the tray out after popping the top. Getting the figure out of a tray is another matter, I wouldn’t say it’s hard, but they thread the cape through the tray, and the cape is wider than the cutout. Simply folding the (thankfully) pliable cape into a taco shape is enough to get it out, but it is a rather perplexing design choice that Mattel continues to stick with.

But I guess that doesn’t matter all that much. The figure is what really counts here.

S.H. Figuarts Gokai Blue Review
Character: Gokai Blue (Joe Gibken)
Series: Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (Pirate Squadron Gokaiger)
Brand: S.H. Figuarts
Producer: Bandai Japan
Price: Upwards from $50

Background:

When I first found out about Gokaiger a couple years back, it was through watching a few fandubbed episodes shown during the Livestream of an artist I’m rather fond of, who I shall keep unnamed due to the content of his works- But Kaity knows who I’m talking about. Anyway, putting aside the general premise of Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger- which can be boiled down to “Space pirates seek the Ultimate Treasure and in the process team up with EVERY SINGLE POWER RANGER EVER to save the Earth”- what struck me first and foremost was the design of the Ranger’s costumes. Being a military brat with a strong connection to the Navy and growing up in North Carolina (which as some of you may know has a strong connection to piracy during its golden age), I was absolutely enamored. The collector in me DEMANDED that I obtain a toy of these, especially the Blue Ranger of that series. Only recently did I get the chance to, however, and after two years of waiting, am I pleased with the results?

Well, read on.”

CASTLE GRAYSKULL

This is easily of the most long awaited of playset for MOTUC line… The Fortress of Mystery & Power. It was sculpted by The Four Horsemen and is available at Mattycollector.com, as of December 16, 2013

Manufactuer : Mattel

At nearly 2 feet tall, this thing is beautifully painted and well detailed. From the stone walls to the little, nice wood tiles, Castle Grayskull is the “ultimate” battleground between the forces of good and evil.

REVIEW: PS Vita – Dragon’s Crown – Extensive Review (by Akunin)

From the desk of Akunin:

“Dragon’s Crown by Atlus and Vanillaware.

Rated T

Blood and Gore
Partial Nudity
Suggestive Themes
Use of Alchohol and Tobacco
Violence

Dragon’s Crown is one of those games that many growing up in the 80’s can relate to. It’s heavily inspired by Golden Axe but with RPG elements thrown in. For those unfamiliar with the side scrolling genre, you are in for a treat.

The character selection screen itself is simplicity at it’s finest. Six adventures huddle around a tavern table.

Difficulty is determined by the character you play. The Fighter and Amazon make it the easiest where as the Wizard and Sorceress have a more difficult time.

The game has gotten a bit of grief from the media regarding its portrayal of the female characters. While there is no nudity present the characters are fluidly animated, whether they are walking or running certain aspects of their figure tend to… react to gravity. This for some might be an issue when children are involved but they don’t put that pretty bold ESRB T on the box for the kiddies. There isn’t a teenage in modern society that hasn’t been exposed to this level of “Suggestiveness” by friends, movies or the internet.”

From the desk of Viper6:

“Myself and Neuspeaq hit this con hard, arriving early 9 Aug for the preregistration and hotel check in. It was the first TF con I had attended and it was Jose’s first con of any sort.

The crown plaza was great and the pre registration packet was pretty cool, with a convention book, access badge, sharkticon pin, numerous pieces of artwork, a paper build-a-bot of sharkticon, a convention poster and a door prize ticket for the sunday auction, which we sadly did not win but some lucky fuckers took home a fortris maximus, a metroplex, an ironhide and ratchet set, and a limited edition “land shark” figure.

We hung out with some great con goers at the hotel’s birch bar (thoroughly rep’n OG13 and Mayhem Customs), invented a highly poularized con themed shot “the energon explosion” equal parts cranberry, chopin vodka, and hypnotic in a beer glass, drop in shot of redbull and viola!!!….its energon colored and tastes great too. then the fuckers ran out of hypnotic

I think we were up til about 0430 or so, polished off two bottles of apothic red in an attempt to be sophisticated and headed outside to kick it with the creator of the con exclusive landshark figure, which i managed to score the next day despite the fact we overslept and didnt get in line in time to buy it then. I paid more for it after jose found a guy willing to let it go, but its well worth it, quite a nice lil figure (basically bulk head painted up as a sharkticon with new head and accessories).

Alot of the other stuff i wanted sold out fast, no t shirt, no glass, and a lot of the third party stuff at the dealer tables didnt last long either (guess im ordering my other stunticons on line). I did snag the third party jumpstarters, and this is where it gets cool, i got brian shearer and john wycough aka “waki” to autograph the charticon jumpstarters ambushed by sharkticon poster that they drew for the con. that was the start of a great conversation where in both checked out my custom work via my smart phone and waki asked if i could make him some 40k 1/18th figures. i suggested he illustrate some of my fan fics as compensation and he agreed! this could be the start of something fan-fucking-tastic.”

MUSIC: Daft Punk: Random Access Memories (PitViper)

Jun 182013

news movies television entertainment

As you all know by now, the members at OG13 have a vast amount of interests outside of toys. We strongly encourage discussions of all types here, and showcase the “good-stuff” regardless on the genre. With that said, music provides an ongoing soundtrack to our lives, whether we are driving, working out, watching movies, or opening Joes. What is it that currently inspires you musically? One man shares his answer…

A review set to the tune of PitViper and his white-noise filters:

Some of you know this, some of you dont, I don’t listen to just metal. Actually I f’ng love a lot of music from the 70’s. The tones and overall feel of many of the songs from early Elton John to disco and funk just has a feel to it to me that you can sink your teeth into, it’s a very tangible thing. The last few years I find myself listening to soundtracks in the same way I cue up an old Iron Maiden album. I just dig big orchestrated sounds that take you back to a scene or a feeling you had when you watched that scene..make any sense?

Ok so fuck all of that. I spent the last 2 days with R.A.M pumping into my headphones. I had purchased the radio edit of Get Lucky when it came out and that was all I knew about this record. Pharrell was doing guest vocals (and sounding like Off The Wall era Michael Jackson) Nile Rodgers was playing guitar and it was produced by Giorgio Moroder. For those that don’t know Nile Rodgers was the guitarist of Chic..as in “Freak Out” and basically invented disco guitar and somewhat reinvented the pop guitar by playing a lot of weird chord inversions that…well they kind of sound like shit until they have music surrounding them. David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”–that’s him, and that’s a chord inversion. Giorgio Morodor is the composer of the Scarface soundtrack, Never Ending Story, Midnight Run and a slew of other crap. He also modernized the synthesizer. Knowing all of this I figured “man now THAT is a friggin collaboration!”…and I was right. However, if you only downloaded the radio edit of Get Lucky, you have jipped yourself. It’s a shell of the original version.

This album to me does what all awesome albums and soundtracks do, it kind of takes you someplace. Brings you back to that “scene”. It’s not typical Daft Punk, it’s very very musical with live instrumentation blended with synth, vocoder, deep lyrics and it’s own feel. While most of it is very upbeat and just in time for Summer there are some really deep tracks that actually are a bit too “heavy” for my mood of late.

So now, I’ll give you the rundown track by track.

1. Give Life Back To Music: Awesome track, BIG sound. I can’t stress “big”. If the Rocky theme and P-Funk had a kid, this might be what came out. Great live, upbeat sound with very pronounced instruments. It’s a great way to start the album.

PitViper steps into the Player’s Club and gives his perspective on G.I. Joe, Retaliation!

First and foremost, Retaliation is a tremendous leap forwards from Rise of Cobra. ROC, to me, is just a dumpster fire from beginning to end. While Retaliation may not be the greatest movie in the history of film, it’s a damn fun movie with a lot to offer a hardcore Joe fan that isn’t your typical angry fanboy that’s going to bitch because Cobra Commander’s underwear are different in this than they were on his original figure 30 years ago.

Speaking of Cobra Commander…

This is the 4th Lego A-Wing. It was first released in 2000, and then in 2006. An A-Wing was also included in the Home One set that was released in 2009. For those of you who do not know what an A-Wing is, it was the ship that crashed into the Executor in Return of the Jedi.”

Only problem I really see with them is the lack of completed paint-apps on some of them.”

Yesterday I found this little gem and I wanted to take the opportunity to show you what it can do! Personally I think this is what a playset should be… with all of the debate on cost, and shelf space… Playmates has figured out a clever way to keep the cost down while providing a medium sized playset that takes up very little shelf space!

How much space?

In pizza box mode: 9.5″ x 9.5″ x 2.5″

In Anchovy Alley playset Mode: 10″ x 10″ x 18″

Opening the box:

Artwork on the inside flap shows the figures released already and figures coming soon: Snake Weed & Baxter Stockman are some awesome upcoming additions to the collection!”
